This course is designed for adoption social workers and mental health providers.
Course Overview:
Should you accept an adoption match where the baby has been exposed to opiates, heroin, methadone, or other drugs? Is methadone better for the baby? What is the long-term prognosis for a baby with prenatal exposure to drugs? What can be done to help with withdrawal? In this course, Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support nonprofit, interviews Dr. Julia Bledsoe, a pediatrician specializing in adoption medicine and drug and alcohol exposure with the University of Washington Center for Adoption Medicine and the UW FAS Clinic.
Participants will be able to:
- Name 4 common drugs children can be exposed to prenatally.
- List 3 long and short term effects of prenatal opioid exposure.
- List 3 long and short term effects of prenatal marijuana exposure.
- Identify three types of treatment for children with prenatal drug exposure.
- List 3 ways parents can foster attachment with children suffering from withdrawal.
- Identify 3 diseases that children with prenatal exposure are also at risk of.
