In this course, we interview Dr. Hollee McGinnis, an Assistant Professor in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work who focuses on mental health and identity for international adopted people. She is also an intercountry adoptee from South Korea. 

Helping Internationally Adopted Children Develop a Healthy Cultural and Racial Identity Outline

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of cultural identification for the emotional development of a child adopted internationally.
  • Explain the acculturation and assimilation issues faced by children adopted internationally.
  • Explain how adoptive parents can help their internationally adopted child develop a healthy cultural and racial identity.
  • Understand the difference between racial, cultural, and ethnic identity for internationally adopted children.
