Intended Audience:
This course is designed for adoption social workers and mental health providers.
Course Overview:
Children adopted from foster care or an orphanage are more likely to have suffered from neglect or abuse, and these children are sometimes more difficult to parent. Host Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support nonprofit interviews Allison Douglas, family advocate at Harmony Family Center in Knoxville, TN and mother of four children adopted from foster care, and Sue Badeau, President of the North American Council on Adoptable Children and adoptive mother of 22 children, about how to raise adopted children.
Participants will be able to:
- Define what “sensory-rich environment” is and how a child might benefit from such an environment.
- List 3 effective tools to help a child by co-regulating.
- Give examples of healthy self-care a parent can consider to manage exhaustion or being overwhelmed from coping with the needs of harder to parent children.
- List 3 means of engagement a parent can employ when a child is withdrawing from connection with the parent.
- Describe several ways that parents can provide healthy involvement in their child’s race or culture when parenting through transracial adoption.
- Identify 3 steps a parent must take to ensure the safety of the child and the other members of the family when a child is aggressive or violent.
