In this course, we interview Dr. Gina Samuels, a Professor at University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration and affiliated with the Center of Race, Politics, and Culture. She is a long-time researcher on transracial adoption.    

Things Families Need to Consider When Adopting a Child of a Different Race or Ethnicity Outline

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between transracial and transcultural adoption. 
  • Explain what adoptive parents can do to help their transracial or transcultural adopted children develop a healthy sense of self. 
  • Describe how parents can prepare for a transracial adoption. 
  • Describe how adoptive parents can deal with family members that are unaccepting of a transracial or transcultural adopted child.
